Dear OMEP,
A journey of a thousand miles begins with a
single step - from Lao Tse aka Tao Te Ching
Is a thousand miles not a challenge? but have
we really affirmed our citizens the first step?
We are the Advocacy Centre of
Classics-reading Education, an organisation established in Beijing, China. The
centre was instituted by Prof. Wang Tsaikuei of National Taichung University
which advocates the Education Principium of "Classics-reading". This
system which subsumes childhood education has been experimented in China and
among Chinese nationals around the world for 16 years and produced excellent
results.
The core idea of this theory is that
education must seize 3 primary principles; they are Education Timing, Education
Content andEducation Method. Our findings show that:
As soon as a person may be educated,
education shall start; hence we encourage prenatal and infanthood education
(which aligns with OMEP's mission). Prenatal and infanthood stages are the
golden age of education.
During the golden age, we shall hand the next
generation a kind of eternal wisdom, eternal as in meaningful to its life now
and later, such is the best content; such is what mankind labels
"classics". "Classics" are those that endured the filter of
human civilisation of thousands of years which came to be known as "Great
Books"1,2
Education may be delivered in 2 methods;
either by cognition or by non-cognition, understanding-centric learning such
mathematics is driven by cognition whereas non-understanding-centric learning
such as aesthetics is not driven by cognition, the latter is emergence that
prompts infiltration, gestation and apprehension. During childhood (pre-13),
the cognitive ability of human is not well developed, this is the period to
weigh in learning of musics, aesthetics, languages and alike, the education
method of this period shall lack make-to-understand. The education method after
the age of 13, however, shall have cognition asserted into; the being-educated
shall learn and understand. Such is the most appropriate method of education.
China had exercised
"Classic-reading" before the modern age as a main method of
education, The Education Principium of "Classics-reading" theorised
by Prof. Wang is based on traditional Chinese private tutorage framework,
practiced by the decades and co-examined with neurology, this philosophy
possesses transcendence and prevalence.
Every nation has fruited their classics and
every child of every nation deserves such fruition to improve intelligence,
develop potential and cultivate temperament through
"Classics-reading" Education, thus we are willing to contribute this
education philosophy to the world as we became aware of 2010 OMEP congress to
be held in Sweden.
In the attachment of this email is an English
Translation of The Handbook of Children "Classics-reading" Education
indited by Prof. Wang, as the targeted audience are common parents, this
handbook lacks academicism. Currently Prof. Wang is working on another piece
titled "Classics-reading" Education Philosophy, which will also be
translated into English upon completion in hope to provide OMEP and the world
at large a piece of reference on our endeavour in this field.

尊敬的「世界早教組織」
千里之行,始於足下。《老子》亦曰《道德經》
行千里之遙莫非是一種挑戰嗎?但我們真的給予了我們公民扎實的第一步了嗎?
我們是設立在中國北京一家名爲「讀經教育推廣中心」的機構,本中心由「臺灣台中教育大學」王財貴教授創立,所宣導的教育理論為「讀經教育學原理」。該項教育系統涵攝著兒童教育,已經在中國及世界各地的華人當中實踐了十六年,取得非常良好的效果。
該理論的核心思想是,教育必須把握三項基本原則,即:教育的時機、教育的內容、教育的方法。我們的研究表明:
當一個人可以接受教育的時候,教育就應當開始,故我們倡導胎教和早期教育(這亦與OMEP的使命相契)。胎兒與嬰幼期是教育的黃金時期;
在教育的黃金期,我們應該交給孩子一種永恆的智慧,永恆即現在有意義,將來亦有意義的內容,此即最佳的教育內容,此即是人類所謂的「經典之作」。所謂「經典」,即在數千年人類文明長河中,大浪淘沙所能流傳下來而被譽爲「偉大之著作」1,2;
教育可以以兩種方式承授,認知的方式和非認知的方式,以理解爲中心的學問如數學是以認知爲驅動的,而不以理解爲中心的學問如美感則不以認知爲驅動,後者依靠耳濡目染的燻習從而形成陶冶,醞釀與領悟。在兒童時期(13歲以前),人類理解力尚不發達,該時期應注重非認知類的學問,如音樂、美術、語文等,教育方式應當缺乏理解性,但在13歲以後的教育方式中則需將理解性加入其中,授教者須學習並且理解。如此是最恰當的教育方法。
中國在現代化之前便是以“讀經”作為實施教育的主要方式,王財貴教授所提出的“讀經教育學原理”,是基於中國傳統私塾教學框架上,經過數十年的實踐,并借鑒現代腦神經科學,具有超越性和普遍性的理論。
每個民族都有自己的經典,各個國家和民族的兒童都應當享有這份可貴的果實,都可以通過“讀經教育”來提升智力、開發潛能、滋養性情,因此當我們得知2010年瑞典OMEP組織大會的消息,願意籍此將該教育理論貢獻給世界。
附件中是王教授所撰寫的《兒童讀經教育說明手冊》之英譯版,本手冊因讀者群為普通父母,故學術性並不強。目前,王教授正在編撰另一部題爲《讀經教育學原理》的著作,待付梓之後,亦將譯為英文,希望能爲早教組織及全世界在該領域的探索提供一番借鑒。
